Teaching Assistant

As a Teaching Assistant your role would be to support the teachers and help children with their educational and social development, both in and out of the classroom.

It could more specifically involve directly supporting children with particular needs, working with them individually or in small group.

Special Needs Assistants: Special needs teaching assistants help children with a wide range of learning, physical or behavioural difficulties. To be a special needs teaching assistant you will need to be patient, and firm when necessary. You must also be willing to help with children's personal needs.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Preparing the classroom ready for lessons
  • Supporting pupils with any work, learning difficulties or disabilities they may have
  • Listening to children read and reading to them
  • Helping teachers to plan learning activities and lessons
  • Help complete any records or reviews
  • Supporting teachers in managing class behaviour
  • Supervising group activities and contributing to observations
  • Clearing away materials and equipment after lessons. Ensuring the class is ready for the following lesson
  • Carrying out administrative tasks such as photocopying, ordering and filing
  • Helping with out of school activities, sports events and extra-curricular club
  • Consoling any children who are upset or have had accidents
  • Helping pupils in practical lessons and aid interaction

At least two of the following Qualifications are required:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Post Graduate Degree/Certificate in Education
  • Level 3 Award/Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools
  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in School

As a TA you will need:

  • Experience with working with Children
  • A basic understanding of how children progress and learn
  • Good reading, writing and numeracy skills
  • The ability to manage groups of children and cope with challenging behaviour
  • To be flexible and creative
  • Have patience and a good sense of humour
  • The ability to work as part of a team
